ARCHITECTURAL FRAGMENTS--CORBELS |
Bibliography: See RIMA 2 p. 367-68 (A.0.101.115) for various examples of inscriptions on clay hands and Frame (1991) for more information about this type of architectural object (also called "Ishtar hands"). |
|
Fragment of a clay hand corbel in the shape of a fist (with a 3-line cuneiform inscription of Ashur-nasi-rpal II on the upper surface of the fingers).
It is possible that these corbels were used to simulate support of a longitudinal timber placed near the top of walls of large rooms. The timber would then appear to help support the major cross beams of the space (for a view of how this might have looked, see the Central (or Ashur-nasir-pal) Building renderings.

Inv. # N1-75
Dimensions: L = 9cm; W = 9cm; H = 4.5cm
Material: unspecified
Date: Ashur-nasir-pal II, 883-859 BCE
Provenance: on the pavement the North Area, in the north part of Room 2 (in square N40/E10).
Editor's note: the above context is from the catalogue of finds; however, the fieldnotes from the 1975 season seem to indicate that this object was instead found in the fill of Room 3, square N40/E20. The notes also hint that more than one corbel was found in this area.
