Remains of a bull lamassu (broken and sawn into four pieces and with its upper body and head sawn away), facing right, that originally stood (farther east) inside along the north wall of the main entryway into the so-called Shalmaneser Building, attributed to Shalmaneser III.
Both sides are inscribed. The text (part of the King's Annals) begins on the back of the statue (and thus invisible to passersby), continues across the front of the lamassu, and then continues again on the back of its southern counterpart (see immediately below; Sobolewski 1982:331, 335).
More specifically, the text on the rear of the sculpture is set c.29cm in from the edge apparently to leave space for a facade slab that would have abutted the lamassu at right angles (see image directly below).
This sculpture, along with its mate (see below) had been observed by Layard, apparently in better condition, before being more fully exposed by the Polish team (Sobolewski 1981: 258-61).

Date: period of Shalmaneser III
Material: limestone/Mosul alabaster
Dimensions: max. H = 2.44m; plinth L = 4.72m; plinth W = 0.77m
Provenance: square N0/W10 (#12 on the site plan)

Remains of a bull lamassu, facing left, that originally stood inside along the south wall of the main entryway into the so-called Shalmaneser Building, attributed to Shalmaneser III (paired with the lamassu shown directly above). As with its partner sculpture, the upper parts of the animal and head have been sawn away.
Inscribed on both sides continuing the inscription begun on the northern lamassu.
This sculpture, along with its mate (see above) had been observed by Layard, apparently in better condition, before being more fully exposed by the Polish team (Sobolewski 1981: 258-61).

Date: period of Shalmaneser III
Material: limestone/Mosul alabaster
Dimensions: max. H = 2.51; plinth L = 4.38m; plinth max. W = 0.82m
Provenance: square S10/W10 (#13 on the site plan)
